இஸ்லாமிய மத அடிப்படைவாதமும் இலங்கை குண்டுவெடிப்புகளும் !

 * முஸ்லிம்களில் ஏகப்பெரும்பாலானோரின் வீட்டு மொழி தமிழ் என்ற காரணத்தை முன்னிறுத்தி, அவர்கள் தமிழர்கள் என்றும் முஸ்லிம்கட்குத் தனிப் பிரதிநிதித்துவம் தேவையில்லை என்றும் இராமநாதன் முன்னர் வாதித்தமையும் நோக்கத்தக்கது.

முஸ்லிம்கள் கிழக்கிலங்கையிற் கணிசமானளவு பிரதேசத்திற் செறிவாக வாழ்கின்றனர். வடக்கிலும் மேற்குக் கரையோரமாயும் முஸ்லிம்கள் கணிசமாக வாழும் பிரதேசங்கள் உள்ளன. ஆயினும் ஏகப் பெரும்பாலோர் பல இடங்களிற் சிங்கள மக்களிடையே ஒரு குறிப்பிடத்தக்க சிறுபான்மையாக உள்ளனர். எனவே அவர்கள் தமிழருடன் ஒப்பிடத்தக்க மொழிப்பற்று உடையோராயினும், அவர்களின் தனித்துவம், மொழியை விட முக்கியமாக மதமும் பண்பாடும் சார்ந்திருந்தது.

அவர்களுடைய தனித்துவத்தை இராமநாதன் நிராகரித்தார். முற்றிலும் யாழ், குடாநாட்டை மையப்படுத்திய தமிழ்த் தேசிய அரசியலை அவருக்குப் பின் வந்த ஜி.ஜி. பொன்னம்பலம் முன்னெடுத்தார்.

* விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் ஆதிக்கம் வலுத்த போர்ச் சூழலில், முஸ்லிம்களும் தமிழ் மக்களைப் போல தமக்குக் கீழ்ப்பட்டு நடக்க வேண்டுமென எதிர்பார்த்த விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் அணுகுமுறையால் முஸ்லிம்கள் அதிருப்தி அடைந்தனர். அதன் பயனாகக் கிழக்கில், குறிப்பாக மட்டக்களப்பு அம்பாறை மாவட்டங்களில், முஸ்லிம்களை வலிந்து தாக்கலும் முஸ்லிம்களின் எதிர்த் தாக்கலும் சில முஸ்லிம்கள் அரசாங்கத்துடன் நிற்பதுமாகத் தமிழ் ‒ முஸ்லிம் நல்லுறவுக்குக் கேடு விளைந்தது.

The first matter is the whole question of the Muslim identity. In the 1880s, for instance, attempts were made by Tamil politicians, such as Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan to show that Muslims were Tamils whose religion was Islam in the same way as other Tamils were Hindus or Christians.

In a paper entitled "The ethnology of the 'Moors' of Ceylon", read before the prestigious Ceylon Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Ramanathan contended, advancing physical, social and cultural evidence in his support, that the Muslims originated from South India and were of the same race as the one to which he belonged: in short, the Muslims were really a group of Tamils who had embraced a new religion, Islam. (Collective Identities, Nationalisms and Protest in modern Sri Lanka, edited Michael Roberts).

I provide below thumb-nail biographical sketches of 25 leading characters in the political turmoil of Sinhalese-Muslim Riots of 1915, as presented by James T.Rutnam, in his 1971 research paper  published in the Ceylon Journal of Historical and Social Studies.  These sketches are highly relevant and informative to comprehend the 1915 ethnic riots.  I have re-arranged the sketches according to the chronological birth years of the featured individuals.

சேர் பொன்னம்பலம் இராமநாதன் (Sir Ponnampalam Ramanathan, ஏப்ரல் 16, 1851 - நவம்பர் 26, 1930) இலங்கையின் தேசியத் தலைவர்களுள் ஒருவராகக் கருதப்பட்டவர். சிங்களவரும், தமிழரும் இன வேறுபாடு பாராது அவரைத் தங்கள் தலைவராக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர்.
